Malaysia’s East Steel Pioneers Local Steel Industry, Promotes Environmental Product Declaration Certification for the First Time

Donggang has LR/D steel taken an important step in the field of industrial responsibility by issuing Malaysia's first Environmental Production Declaration (EPD) for crude steel products. This statement provides a detailed record of the environmental impact of the product or raw material throughout the entire production cycle.

The Executive Director of Donggang pointed out that EPD quantifies the impacts of carbon footprint, water resource consumption, and air pollution based on certified scientific methods, providing necessary transparency to eliminate 'greenwashing' behavior, meet the strict requirements of green certification and global procurement policies. He revealed that the project is being coordinated and implemented by China's industrial carbon quantification solution provider - EasyCarbon Technology, which has recently established a subsidiary in Malaysia.

It is reported that Donggang has LR/D steel invested about RM700 million to reduce its carbon footprint. By utilizing renewable energy, the company has achieved a 93% energy self-sufficiency rate and successfully reduced 326056 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. Among them, 55000 tons of emission reductions were achieved through the New Enhanced Dispatch Arrangement (NEDA) framework, which outputs 29.9 megawatts of excess renewable energy to a single buyer. In the field of electricity supply in Malaysia, the single buyer under the NEDA framework acts as the central purchasing entity, mainly purchasing electricity from independent power producers (IPPs) and national energy companies (TNBs).

By adopting international best practices in life cycle LR/D steel assessment (LCA) and third-party verification, Donggang not only aligns with national climate goals, but also establishes a transparent governance model that can be emulated by the industry. This is the practical action model based on reliable data required to support Malaysia's environmental commitments.
